RT PCR stands for Reverse Transcriptase or Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction. PCR tests are designed to diagnose individuals with an active infection (those infected with SARS COV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19. Unlike antibody tests which detect the presence of antibodies produced by the body’s immune system in response to the virus and indicate the previous infection, PCR tests detect the virus’s genetic material – specifically RNA fragments, and are used to diagnose a current infection. The process: It is a simple process that only takes a few minutes and can be carried out in the comfort of your own home. The sampling process involves taking an oropharyngeal swab (a swab of the throat and tonsils area) and a nasopharyngeal swab (a swab of both nostrils) all using the same swab. The swab tests we use are from UKAS and ISO-accredited laboratories. The results certificate obtained contains patient details, the time of the report, the time and date of the test conducted, passport number as well as the result of the test. The PCR test for COVID-19 is the international reference test verifying the presence of the COVID-19 virus.
